TWO talented fighters from the Bury St Edmunds Thai boxing camp returned victorious from Luton after besting their opponents in a regional fight event last weekend.

Joe Le Maire and Dean Burroughs, who train at Unit One Combat Sports and Fitness in Kempson Way, both fought at the Pure Force 7 promotion on Saturday.

Le Maire, 12, took on the experienced George Gillies, also 12, from the Kaang Rang Gym in a 34kg contest.

And he struggled with his opponent’s tricky style in the first round but, following advice from his corner, began having success with his trademark roundkicks and clinch turns in the second.

Le Maire found his rhythm in the third and final round, setting a blistering pace for which Gillies had no answer, and duly claimed a majority decision win in the fourth fight of his Muay Thai career.

Burroughs made a successful start to his competitive career, completely outclassing Chad Anderton of Storm gym at light heavyweight.

After a confident start it was soon evident that the 22-year-old was a cut above his game opponent as he landed hard, sharp punch and kick combos almost at will and floored his opponent with a well placed knee to the mid-section.

To his credit Anderton made it to the final bell but the decision was a formality and Burroughs picked up the unanimous verdict.

Gym coach Trevor Walker said: “It was a pleasure to corner for two such talented and committed young fighters.

“Their dedication in the gym really paid off in the ring.”
