Bury Town manager Ben Chenery says there will be two windows of opportunity for players and managers alike to get the best deals possible for next season.

Chenery has already signed Leiston midfielder Leon Ottley-Gooch and Needham Market defender Ollie Fenn, whilst retaining several of last season’s squad on new contracts.

Ahead of the Blues’ third straight season in Isthmian North, Chenery is keen to add to his numbers – the ex-Chelmsford City assistant manager wants to bring in a goalkeeper to compete with Neil O’Sullivan – but is content to bide his time.

“There are two windows of opportunity in the transfer window,” said Chenery.

“You have got the period now where players are touting themselves about, then there is a second one which comes in June-July time when they come back and you can do a deal with them.

“At the minute everyone is talking to everyone else, and unless you have got the top money you are not going to get the best players.”

Not that Chenery is keen on making wholesale changes at the west Suffolk club, following an 11th-placed finish last season.

That was an improvement on their previous season’s finish of 13th which, in turn, came a year after their relegation.

“We have been working towards building a strong squad over the last couple of seasons, the core is quite strong and I am quite happy with what we have,” Chenery added.

“Ollie Fenn and Leon Ottley-Gooch are excellent additions and are a big part of what we want to do – we don’t want to change too much.”

The Blues will line-up alongside the likes of local rivals, Mildenhall Town and AFC Sudbury.

“I think this is the toughest league yet,” said Chenery, in reference to his club’s previous two seasons in the division.

“Maldon & Tiptree didn’t go up, Bowers & Pitsea have a good budget. Then there is AFC Hornchurch, Haringey Borough, Phoenix Sports, Canvey Island, Norwich United and Sudbury.

“There used to be eight teams in the league and the rest were not so good. Now there are at least 12 top clubs which is great for the division and, as a football club, it is great to be involved in.”
