BURY Town set up a dream FA Youth Cup third round tie away to Championship club Nottingham Forest after defeating Macclesfield on penalties last night.
Bury held their nerve to win the shoot-out 4-3 after drawing 1-1 after extra time under the Ram Meadow floodlights in their second round tie.
Bury started well and had more of the play in the opening 10 minutes. In a Macclesfield break, Nick Pope saved well from Tom France. Macclesfield settled and it was the Bury defence that was stretched as Macclesfield pushed forward but Pope was not troubled.
On the half-hour Pope was called into action, making a fine save from Vinny Mukendi. Macclesfield continued to push forward but were unable to create a clear chance. They started the second half in control and little was seen of the Bury attack. The Suffolk side came back well midway through the half and came close to scoring when, after a great run by Andrew Nugent, Archie Watson shot just wide.
Bury took the lead on 76 minutes through Josh Curry following a free kick but a minute later Macclesfield equalised through Michael Thomas after a good move down the left.
Chances then came at both ends as both sides looked for a winner. Extra time saw Macclesfield pushing forward and Bury were content to play on the break.
Bury did get the ball in the net but the offside flag was raised. Macclesfield dominated but the Bury defence held firm and Bury even created the odd chance on the break, before the tie was settled on penalties.
