Following a diabolical April where the weather put pay to four home meetings Mildenhall Fen Tigers are on the road this week as they face the Isle of Wight Warriors and Plymouth Devils tomorrow night and Friday night, writes Phil Kirk.

These two fixtures now the opening meetings in the Fen Tigers defence of the National Trophy they won last season beating Plymouth in a pulsating two-legged final. They then return home ready for Sunday’s now season opener against the Kent Kings (3pm start).

The Fen Tigers Young Guns are not short of practise though with five of their riders appearing in the British U21 semi-final and both Josh Bailey and Drew Kemp were in Tuesday night’s final, scoring six and five points respectively.

There have been guest bookings and plenty of practising for riders when the weather allowed, and promoter Kevin Jolly is not offering the weather problems as any possible excuse for his team.

“While it would have been good to have started our season with a handful of home meetings I have no doubts that the lads can hit the ground running and collect some important away points from this mini tour,” he said.

“They have been riding whenever possible and are so focused on the season ahead. If we are to achieve our ambitions this season we must be stronger on the road and what better way to start than this week.

“That said we are not taking anyone lightly home or away and we will be having a good chat on the ferry over to the Island to ensure everyone knows what is required of them.”

“Sunday’s opponents at West Row, Kent are always difficult opponents and we need to be at our sharpest to see them off too, it certainly will be a big four days for the club and we will know alot more about ourselves come the end of this weekend.”
