June is proving a busy month for 16-year-old Ipswich racing driver Robert Welham with two rounds of the Super One Series, and his F1000 Single Seat Series debut all while sitting his GCSEs at Claydon High School!

Rob was favourite to win the Junior British title after his success in 2017 but an amendment to the MSA junior upper age limit has seen him move up to the Senior TKM Extreme Class.

Last weekend saw round tow of the TKM Extreme British Championships take place at Dorset’s Clay Pigeon Circuit and, against a highly-experienced grid of 42, Rob took second place making him one of the youngest drivers to take a senior podium in the class.

Rob qualified 16th but with only three tenths separating the top 20 it was going to be a challenging weekend.

Throughout the heats and pre-final he made excellent progress finishing ninth, fifth and fourth respectively to see him start the main final fourth on the grid.

The final was a tense affair with the top six bumper to bumper throughout the race.

Rob took the lead with a sweet overtaking move on Tal-ko works driver Adam Sparrow and held it for five laps before being overtaken and dropping back to fourth with five laps to go.

With determination and some fantastic overtakes, Rob reclaimed second spot, holding off a late challenge from Sparrow to take the chequered flag and a well-deserved podium.

Team manager Jake Coward said: “Rob showed this weekend how much he has learned and applied it in such a competitive grid.

“It’s a great result and I am confident there will be more to come from him throughout this season.”

In addition to this Rob has been invited to compete in the F1000 Championship in 2019 and has been working hard testing the car and on the simulator at the Izone driver training facility, near Silverstone.

Rob will make his F1000 debut in the 1000cc 150mph+ racing car at Rockingham Raceway, near Kettering, on the weekend of June 23/24 and shows the progress this talented young driver is making in the world of motorsport.
