Colchester United’s club captain, Luke Prosser, believes his side can go on a winning run that can threaten the likes of Lincoln City and Exeter City at the top of League Two.

The U’s are away at Morecambe this afternoon, a gruelling 600-mile round trip for John McGreal’s men spread over a couple of days, looking to build on last Saturday’s 3-1 home victory over Crawley Town.

That fifth win from seven home starts has propelled the U’s back up to sixth in the table, but the fact that are yet to claim back-to-back league victories this term is the reason why they are trailing the top three clubs in the automatic promotion zone.

Prosser, though, insists that this can all change as the Essex club face up to successive away trips to Morecambe and then struggling Grimsby Town (next Tuesday evening), before welcoming leaders Lincoln to the Community Stadium next weekend.

“We have to kick on. We got off to a good start, then we had a sort of little dip, so-to-speak. Now we want to really kick on,” insisted Prosser, who will again marshal the U’s defence at the Globe Arena this afternoon.

“Every year is the same. The ones who are the most consistent are at the top, like your Lincolns and your Exeters, so why not us?

“I thought we showed character to come back (from a harsh penalty decision) and put two past Crawley in the second half, so it’s a very happy dressing room at the moment.

“It was a good second-half performance, because Crawley were always going to go for it, and leave a few more bodies up, so we had some defending to do.

“My goal-line clearance (from Ollie Palmer’s header) is what you have to do, as a defender. To me it felt the equivalent of scoring a goal.

“We look dangerous going forward, with so many goal-threats. The likes of Noz (Luke Norris), Noubs (Frank Nouble) and Szmods (Sammie Szmodics), all finish like that in training as well.

“We can counter, and offer a threat against anyone.

“The fact that Noz chose to set up team-mates, rather than just shoot (last weekend), shows what team spirit we have at this club. That’s how good it is.

“We want to be getting three points, week in, week out. The three points are always huge.

“We haven’t got on that little run yet, so we are desperate to start one. We have two big games coming up where we feel we can pick up points, even though we are away from home,” added Prosser.
