DEFENDING champions Ipswich suffered an unlikely defeat at the hands of their predecessors, Kesgrave, in the MSC Suffolk Alliance on Sunday.

All went well as Ipswich inserted the home team and dismissed them for a meagre total of 114. But in reply they were in turn bundled out for just 91.

Kesgrave got off to a dreadful start as they lost four wickets with just five runs on the board. Skipper Mike Worne set about rebuilding the innings and he received useful support from Ben Colver, Richard Bradley, Sam Colver and Shelden Read.

Worne was fortunate that Ipswich failed to take their catches as he top-scored with 41, with extras the next-best contribution with 23.

But even so it seemed that 114 would not be sufficient to pose too many problems for Ipswich. But within a few overs Ipswich were also four down, with just 18 runs to show for them.

Adie Gale and Joe Bonner both grabbed two for 21, and Mike Worne continued his good day with five for 32. Chris Bell threatened to take Ipswich to their target, but he fell to Read’s first delivery and the match was over, with Kesgrave winning by 23 runs. The win saw Kesgrave take up the early lead at the top of the Section A table.

In other Section A games Sudbourne Hall saw off Easton by 68 runs, while Stephen Owston guided Saxmundham to a five-wicket win over Stradbroke with a well-paced innings of 66 not out.

Jack Buckmaster was the man of the match as Wortham beat Rumburgh by 35 runs. He had top-scored with an unbeaten 53 out of a total of 150 for seven and then snapped up five for 11 as Rumburgh were bowled out for 115 in reply. Dan Philpot backed him up with four for 27.

In Section B there was an exciting finish as Needham Market beat Caribbeans by one wicket. Bob Goodall showed a disregard for running as 52 out of his 58 against his former team-mates came in boundaries. There was not much support as Kevin Folkard grabbed five wickets in five overs and the Caribbeans total was just 134. Needham made a disastrous start in reply as they found themselves 27 for five in nine overs. However a useful contribution of 30 by Craig Morris gave Needham some momentum and for the second week in a row a crucial partnership between Andrew Teague and Neil Place put Needham in line for victory, which came when No. 11 Andy Ottley smacked a huge six and then, two balls later, a four to win the match.

Gareth Gorst-Allman scored 117 not out and Jordan Barber 83 as Southwold rattled up 233 for two, yet St Margarets knocked off the runs to win by seven wickets. Paul Allen led them to their big target with an unbeaten 123, supported by James Ubbi’s 51. Twenty-four hours later Allen was at it again, with 115 not out as St Margarets beat Felixstowe II on Bank Holiday Monday in the Two Counties.

Gavin Johnson scored 86 as Stowupland beat Eye in Section C and Andy Baker and Adam Green both made 70s as Bawdsey scored 235 for seven and hung on for a seven-run win at Melton St Audry’s. Stuart Dineen’s 95 was in vain.

In the Hunts County Bats Suffolk League Chris Baugh carried his bat for 134 not out as Mildenhall scored 243 four four – and he still ended on the losing side as Haverhill replied with 247 for five to win, with Luke Youngs (95 not out) and Adam Dellar (91) leading a remarkable successful run chase.

There was another century as Worlington romped past the Lakenheath total of 171 to win by nine wickets – Tom Osbourne was 106 not out at the end.

James Poulson’s 79 was the highlight as Sudbury beat Edwardstone by 35 runs, with Phil Halliday (four for 42) and Jack Backler (three for 36) taking the bowling honours while Woolpit saw off Bury St Edmunds by 38 runs, after Dave Thompson top scored with 74 not out. Mark Nunn replied with 85 for Bury, who ended on 175 for eight.

In Division Two Kent Tomsett scored 89 out of Exning’s 270 for seven, and he followed up with three for six as Withersfield were dismissed for 190.
