Chelmsford City face Concord Rangers in County Cup

MANAGER Glenn Pennyfather claims his starting eleven is “still very much up in the air” as Chelmsford City embark on a tough Essex Senior Cup Quarter-Final at in-form Concord Rangers tonight (7:45pm).

The Clarets will be bidding for a place in the last four of the County Cup at the Aspect Arena but Pennyfather is still some way from knowing who will line-up against the third-placed Ryman League Premier Division outfit.

“We’ve got a few injuries which affect my options, but I’ll play as strong a team as I possibly can because we aspire to get to the final,” said Pennyfather.

“As semi-pro footballers you want to possibly test yourselves against the likes of Colchester United and Southend United in professional grounds, and that will be the same for us and for Concord.

“It will be a tough game which will be made tougher by the fact that I’ll have some last-minute decisions to make on who starts the match.”

The Beachboys are currently enjoying their highest ever position in the football pyramid after a meteoric rise from the Essex Senior League a few seasons ago.

They were responsible for knocking the Clarets out of the same competition last year - 4-1 at Melbourne in a game Glenn marked as one of the low points in that campaign.

“They’re in the middle of a good run, and they’re having a decent season,” said Pennyfather.

“Anyone near the top of their table is full of confidence and they will be buoyed further if they have the nice scenario of staying in a cup towards the end of the campaign, just like we want to.

“We’re having cup runs ourselves and want to make the right decisions to see them continue.”
