The two come to Portman Road as a pair having previously worked together at Shrewsbury, where the reached last season’s League One Play-Off Final and at Grimsby, where they won promotion back to the Football League in 2016.

Hurst knows his No 2 has firm ambitions to enter management himself one day, but is delighted to be joined in Suffolk by a man who shares many of his values and with whom he works well both on the training field and on the touchline.

“Chris wants to be a manager one day and has progressed up the leagues,” Hurst said.

“He’s very demanding, like me and we share the same views on many things in the game. Coaching wise, we are on the same page definitely.

“He is big on setting standards. He also appreciates the job players have to do. Like me, he wants the players to enjoy going about their work.

“Players who we have worked with us in the past say they have enjoyed it and that’s important.”

Once Hurst returns he is due to begin the second part of an LMA (League Managers Association) course in London, but is set to be in Ipswich on Tuesday to be officially unveiled as the club’s new manager.
