‘DAD’S Army’ will aim to pull off a Bob Coleman Cup upset tomorrow.

Touchline SIL side Division Two side Claydon host Senior Division side Leiston St Margaret’s in the fourth round of this season’s competition.

With Claydon top of the table, after winning seven and drawing one of their last eight games, and their visitors second-from-bottom having lost six matches in a row before a draw in their last outing, the scene is set for a giantkilling.

Claydon are managed by the vastly-experienced Trevor Wardlaw, who has been with the village side for four years.

He said: “Our aim when we set out was to keep going until we got a Senior side and so we will now see what we can do.

“From my point of view I think they will see it as a good opportunity to get some confidence back, while from our perspective it is as good a time as any to play them.

“We played them a couple of years ago in the Junior Cup when they were in Division One and I was very impressed with them.

“They had some good young players, but I don’t know if they have been able to hang on to all of them.”

Wardlaw, whose 40 years as a manager has spanned spells at Debenham LC, East Bergholt United, Framlingham Town, Old Newton United, Ransomes Sports and Stowmarket Town, applied the ‘Dad’s Army’ tag to his own team.

“Ten of my players are over 30 and 12 of them have played Senior football in the past.

“They are capable in a one-off game of performing at that level, but the reason they are playing at a lower level is they can’t do it consistently week in, week out because of how fast-paced the game is now.

“They are complemented by three or four youngsters, who are already developing into good players,” he said.

“We are the underdogs – I would even class us as underdogs if we were playing against a Division One side.

“It won’t do us any harm to be underdogs. When you have been top of the league for several weeks like we have every game is a pressure game, so the pressure will be on the opposition for a change, so we may thrive on that.”
