Colchester 0 Holcombe 1

COLCHESTER put in a tough display against a strong Holcombe side on Saturday but couldn't get the goal they needed to compete for a share of the points.

The home side, only too aware how difficult this game would be, started strongly, breaking down the Holcombe play where possible. The defenders had their work cut out all afternoon, but a strong display from Naomi Allen and Angela Evans kept the Holcombe attack at bay for long periods of the game.

With only a few chances coming Colchester's way it was Holcombe who broke the deadlock with a powerful shot from the edge of the 'D', squeezing through Colchester keeper Jess Gurney's pads. The visitor's created further chances but were unable to take advantage of them and the sides went into half time with Holcombe leading 1-0.

The second half saw Colchester press with more determination and finally get some shots on goal. Helen Peters went the closest with her shot just going wide. Holcombe remained dangerous on the break but Colchester worked hard as a team with every player committed to getting back to cover the danger.

This commitment worked well in defence but left players exhausted when it came to attacking at the other end of the pitch.
