Colchester 0 Lowestoft 1
Colchester were deeply disappointed to lose the battle between second and third place on Saturday.
With much at stake and nothing to separate the two sides in the league, the match against Lowestoft was always going to be tough.
The first half showed just how evenly matched the two sides are, with neither side creating a clear cut chance and with Colchester, especially, finding it difficult to break into the visitor's 'D'.
Much of the play was in the middle of the pitch, with both sides passing the ball around but with no score going into half time the game was still anyone's to win.
The second half saw much of the same until Lowestoft took Colchester by surprise on the break, leaving Kate Mead to make a fine one-on-one save to prevent a certain goal for the visitors.
However, the move saw Lowestoft awarded a short corner which was deflected in at the post for the visitor's to take a 1-0 lead.
The goal acted as a wake up call for the home side who then controlled the possession, with Lucy Struth and Angela Cook taking the game to Lowestoft.
However, with time running out and no luck from numerous short corners, Colchester could sense it wasn't to be their day.
Helen Barnes came the closest to equalizing from a short corner but didn't see the ball until late, summing up Colchester's performance - almost but not quite there.
