Division One North
Colchester 2 Wisbech 0
A STRONG second-half Colchester display proved enough to beat league rivals Wisbech on Saturday.
Wisbech were quick from the start, passing the ball around and taking on the Colchester defence with confidence, but failing to get the final shot on goal. Ten minutes into the half Colchester finally managed to string together some passes and the possession paid off when they were awarded a penalty corner. Opting for the straight strike Colchester took the lead thanks to Lucy Struth's powerful effort from the top of the 'D'. The goal settled the visitor's nerves and meant that they saw out the rest of the first half comfortably.
The second half saw Colchester dominate possession and limit the home side's attacking play. Midway through the half Colchester doubled their lead from another penalty corner. The routine broke down but captain Naomi Allen was on hand to calmly turn and reverse strike the ball past the Wisbech keeper. With Colchester winning 2-0 Wisbech never looked like getting back into the game and so it finished with the visitor's comfortable winners and remaining top of the league going into the Christmas break.
