Colchester United could come in for Elliott Hewitt, after the ex-U’s loanee was released by his parent club Ipswich Town this afternoon.

Hewitt played 23 games for the U’s, 21 of them in League One and two in the FA Cup, following two separate loan stints at the Weston Homes Community Stadium last season.

The 20-year-old operated both as a right-back, and right-winger, during his time with Colchester, and scored a superb solo goal in a 2-0 away win at Peterborough on January 10.

U’s boss Tony Humes is a big admirer of Hewitt, and so could be tempted to offer him a permanent contract this summer, especially following the departure of right-back Sean Clohessy, who was released from his U’s contract earlier this month, with a year still left on the deal.

Ex-Macclesfield defender Hewitt was signed by Ipswich on a three-year deal in the summer of 2012.
