Colchester United have taken up the option of extending both Brennan Dickenson’s and Tom Lapslie’s contracts for another year.

A day after the news broke that stalwart winger Drey Wright had left the Essex club, to join St Johnstone on a free transfer on a three-year deal, it was confirmed by the U’s that winger Dickenson and midfielder Lapslie will be staying with the U’s for the 2018-19 season.

Dickenson had a superb first season with the U’s, following his move from Gillingham in the summer of 2016, scoring 12 goals, but he only played seven games last season due to a long-term knee injury.

Lapslie, by contrast, has played 95 games for the U’s since graduating from the Academy.

U’s Director of Football, Tony Humes, confirmed. “As with a number of our contracts, the club had an option included for an additional year, and we are taking up the options in both Tom and Brennan’s cases.

“Both players will, I’m sure, have big parts to play in the squad this season and we felt it was important to keep them both on board.

“It has been a tough season for Brennan personally, being injured for a lot of it, and it’s been tough for us as a club to be without him.”
