Brennan Dickenson has been on fire this season, both in terms of scoring goals and creating goals.

The U’s left wing-back rifled home a spectacular opening goal in Good Friday’s 1-1 draw against already-promoted Doncaster Rovers, to boost his tally for the season to an impressive 12 goals, and within three of leading scorer Chris Porter.

In addition, an inspired Dickenson is joint ninth in the League Two assists charts, having directly set up seven goals for his team-mates.

The 24-year-old will be looking to boost both these stats at Morecambe this afternoon, and his manager John McGreal is not surprised by how well his summer recruit has done.

“Brennan has got a thunderous left foot, as we’ve seen,” explained McGreal, following the draw with runaway leaders Doncaster.

“He’s been confident right throughout the whole season, and if he’s not scoring goals, then he’s supplying goals.

“He’s a thick-set kid and he’s got an excellent turn of speed as well. At the minute he is amongst the goals as well, which is fortunate for us.

“We’ve come away with a really good point against a top, top team in Doncaster. I’m thrilled to bits, and it’s now about recovering for Morecambe,” added McGreal.

The U’s boss introduced long-time injury victim Doug Loft as a late substitute against Rovers.

In contrast to Dickenson, who has only missed eight games this season, fellow summer recruit Loft (both men arrived from Gillingham in the close-season) had not played since last August, due to a struggle with an Achilles injury. Midfielder Loft’s last appearance, before his 88th minute substitute outing against Rovers, was in the 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth on August 20, his only league start of the campaign.

“Doug (Loft) had been breaking down earlier on in the season,” explained McGreal.

“But he played 45 minutes for the under-23s recently, and I just think his experience is vital for our squad, because we are still a relatively young squad.”

Today’s hosts Morecambe effectively secured their League Two status, thanks to a surprise 1-0 win at play-off candidates Stevenage on Good Friday.

Lee Molyneux netted a 68th minute winner to end a run of nine games without a victory.
