Match winner, Luke Prosser, announced there was “no better feeling” after scoring the crucial goal in Colchester United’s 1-0 win at promotion rivals MK Dons yesterday.

Centre-half Prosser, the U’s skipper, celebrated his first goal since last March – in a 2-1 home win over Luton – and in fact only his second goal for the Essex club since his arrival in the summer of 2016.

“It was a good day all-round, personally for me and for the team,” enthused Prosser.

“It was a very good performance and I think it shows that we were more than capable of getting the ball down to play just as much as they (MK Dons) were.

“We weathered the storm when we had to, when they put us under pressure for a spell in the second half. We knew they would do that, being 1-0 down, but we changed formation slightly and when we got on the ball we caused them a few problems.

“In fact, we could have scored another one and Nos (Luke Norris) will be disappointed, but there’s no better feeling when you win 1-0 and you score, to be honest,” added Prosser, who was referring to Norris’ spurned chance to net a U’s second in the second half.

On his goal, 30-year-old Prosser joked: “It was good. I made Dicko’s (Brennan Dickenson’s) corner look pretty good!

“It wasn’t meant to be like that. We have all got areas to attack, from set pieces, and when a flat ball comes into the area, you attack the ball.

“It was a bit of a deft touch, but the team performance all-round was very, very good, especially after the previous weekend’s performance (4-0 defeat at Carlisle).

“MK Dons put quite a few balls into our box, but we got our heads on them today. We put our bodies on the line and we defended really, really well.

“(Keeper) Rene (Gilmartin) is a good shot stopper and he has a lot of experience, so he helps us boys out, by talking to us. It was a good performance from him as well.

“We dealt with pretty much everything. They had one or two half-chances, but on the whole it was a very good team display.

“We also played some really good football ourselves. I thought we were just the better team today.

“We have managed to come back with wins, after defeats this season, which is a good sign, and our fans were excellent today in what is a fantastic stadium.”
