Ryan Jackson has agreed to join Colchester United.

Jackson has been at Gillingham for the past two seasons, but has agreed a contract with the U’s which will begin tomorrow, when his contract with the Gills expires.

The 26-year-old started his career at AFC Wimbledon, making his debut for the Dons in April 2010 against Histon.

Just over two years later, he signed for Macclesfield but only stayed for a season before moving into the League with newly-promoted Newport County.

He turned down a new contract in South Wales in the summer of 2015 in favour of Gillingham, and linked up again with his former boss Justin Edinburgh, who managed him at County.

The two year spell in Kent was his most productive, making more than 70 appearances across the 15/16 and 16/17 seasons.

Jackson will take the No.2 squad number vacated by Richard Brindley, who turned down a new contract at the U’s at the end of last season.
