Cole Skuse hopes to finish his playing career at Ipswich Town and move into coaching at Portman Road, but admits his long-term plan could change if Mick McCarthy moves on in the summer.

Skuse has signed a new contract with the club through to the summer of 2020, with the club holding an option to extend that for a further year, while the midfielder has already had conversations about potentially moving into a coaching role in the future.

While the 31-year-old can see himself staying in Suffolk beyond the end of his playing career, he also accepts his best-laid plans could suddenly change if McCarthy was to move on in the summer when his own deal expires.

“You would be lying if you said you weren’t always thinking about it,” Skuse said in a club interview when asked whether he had been worried regarding his future.

“Not just that, you get a badgering wife in your ear 24/7 asking ‘what’s going on? Are we moving house? Are the kids moving school’.

“So to have it done now is a brilliant thing, good for your peace of mind.

“Who knows. There could be a change of manager in the summer for example and they could come in and say ‘look, although you’ve signed your new deal you’re not for us and we’ll be going down another route’ so that could completely put a spanner in works.

“I will be 34 when I finish, I’m not a spring chicken just starting his career, so if I could finish my career here and then go down a different path of working in the club as a coach of some sort (that would be great).

“I’ve spoken to Bryan Klug and his staff in the academy and they said they’d love for to do some work in the Academy so if that’s a route I go down I’d love to stay here.”

Skuse’s new contract comes at a time when McCarthy’s future remains undecided, with the Blues boss now the odds-on favourite with some bookmakers for the vacant Barnsley job.

McCarthy recently revealed that goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski has agreed a new contract, although it remains unsigned, while the future of David McGoldrick is also unclear with his deal up in the summer.

Teddy Bishop and Luke Hyam both have contracts expiring this summer although, unlike McGoldrick, the club hold an option to extend their deals by a further season.
