Copdock & Old Ipswichian captain, Chris Swallow, believes that last Saturday’s five-wicket win over struggling Bury St Edmunds will do wonders for team confidence, going into the rest of the season.

Swallow also highlighted the individual performances of bowler Jason Pembroke, and all-rounders Jack Beaumont and Daniel Leggett, as Copdock moved up to eighth in the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League table.

Pembroke took the first five batsmen to fall, in Bury’s disappointing total of 238 all out, claiming five for 56 off 15 overs, before Beaumont (103 not out) and teenager Leggett (50), a very bright prospect, helped the hosts to a comfortable win.

“Copdock is always a good place to bat, so we were happy to get Bury out for 238,” explained skipper Swallow.

“In fact, we should have got them out for a little less, because we put a couple of catches down. But we still felt that it was an under-par score.

“Jason (Pembroke) has bowled very well for us this season. He has been vital for the club.

“He moved over from Mistley last year, having also played Sunday cricket for Brantham, but he’s really had his chance to play regularly this season following all the summer departures.

“Jason has had more of an opportunity, and he bowled really well on Saturday.

“Getting overseas player (Murray Commins) was a vital wicket for us. He holed out to Donald Mlamba in the covers. That was a really good catch.

“Luke Du Plooy (79) played well for them, although he was dropped, as did Alastair Allchin (74) later in the innings, but we felt that this was a 250-plus wicket,” added Swallow.

Spinner Swallow praised fellow club stalwart, Beaumont, and youngster Leggett, a pupil at East Bergholt School, for their subsequent knocks during Copdock’s reply. Both had also bowled well earlier in the day.

“Daniel (Leggett) played a very mature innings, for a 15-year-old. He played very nicely, “ continued Swallow.

“Jack also played very maturely, and paced his innings very well. He never struggled to score runs.

“I think this should be a big confidence-booster for the whole team, going forward.

“This was our third win of the season, and we have targeted six or seven victories to keep us up the table.”
