Ipswich Town target Danny Ward has revealed why he turned down a switch to Suffolk, the striker opting to team-up with former manager Neil Warnock, at Cardiff City.

The Blues were keen to land the Rotherham United frontman, who scored 12 goals as the Millers were relegated from the Championship last season, and offered a substantial figure plus two players on-loan to seal the deal.

However, six-foot striker Ward (25), who scored twice for the Millers as the South Yorkshire side held Ipswich 2-2 at Portman Road last season – one of just two away points picked up by the team all term – decided to be reunited with Warnock, who worked wonders at Rotherham, saving them from relegation at the end of the 2015-16 season.

The former Huddersfield Town striker, who has joined the Bluebirds for a fee thought to be in the region of £1.6m, spoke exclusively to the Sheffield Star, and said: “I’d worked with Neil Warnock before and loved my time at Rotherham with him.

He was brilliant, and so were Blacky (Kevin Blackwell) and Jeppo (Ronnie Jepson).

“I knew a few of the Cardiff lads as well. Everything seemed to fit.

“That’s what swayed me to go for Cardiff rather than Ipswich.

“Obviously, Cardiff is a long, long way away, but when you know some of the people down there and you know the manager can get teams promoted because he’s done it in the past, it makes moving easier.

“It just seemed like a great opportunity.”

Ward revealed he also spoke to two players with Ipswich connections before making his mind up to move to Wales.

“I had a couple of conversations with Ipswich. But Cardiff were in and the fact Neil Warnock was there was a big thing because we’d worked so well together before,” he added.

“He kept Rotherham up in 2016 and I know what he’s about. I’m good friends with Jon Stead (Ex-Ipswich striker) and Paddy Kenny (Former Ipswich loan goalkeeper) who’ve worked with him before and done great things with him.

“They don’t have a bad word to say about him, and I’d experienced that myself.

“That’s why Cardiff was the one for me.”
