Former Ipswich Town striker David McGoldrick is set to join Championship rivals Sheffield United on trial, according to the Sheffield Star.

The 30-year-old was a talismanic figure during the first half of his five-year stay at the Blues, but ended up being released this summer following two injury hit seasons.

The Sheffield Star reports that Blades boss Chris Wilder has spoken at length to former Town manager Mick McCarthy about the front man’s numerous niggles, with McCarthy advising that they were exacerbated by a three hour commute from his family home in Nottingham.

United have also been linked to strikers Scott Hogan (Aston Villa) and Sam Gallagher (Southampton).

McGoldrick could feature in a friendly at Bradford City tomorrow night.
