Davies led the Rams to the Premier League but left the club after a disastrous start to a season which went on to be the worst-ever premiership campaign.
The Scotsman also enjoyed success at Preston, but has been out of football since leaving Derby.
Struggling Forest sacked manager Colin Calderwood on Boxing Day.
