Swann dismissed opener Gautam Gambhir (19) and Rahul Dravid (3) both lbw as India lurched to 37 for three from 14 overs at tea. Jimmy Anderson had provided the initial breakthrough, bowling Virender Sehwag for nine.
England had earlier been dismissed for 316 ten overs after lunch with recalled wicketkeeper Matt Prior hitting an undefeated 53.
