Drew Kemp is taking a break from his GCSE revising to try and grab himself a British speedway title tonight, at Foxhall Stadium.

The 15-year-old Ipswich-based Claydon High School pupil, who rides for Mildenhall Fen Tigers in the National League, will be one of the favourites for a podium place. He will certainly be one of the favourites with the home crowd.

Kemp and 15 other riders line-up at Foxhall, 7.30pm start, looking to win the British U19 title.

It’s a prestigious event for the Ipswich management to be hosting. And although another popular Fen Tiger, Jordan Jenkins, is missing through injury, his team-mate Kemp is very much up for it.

“I’m looking forward to it,” the teenager said.

“It would be great to win it, of course it would, especially at Ipswich. That would be even better.

“I’ve practiced at Ipswich a lot, although I’ve never actually raced at the track.”

Kemp has made a flying start to his fledgling career at Mildenhall and he will have plenty of support in a young field of up-and-coming riders.

At West Row he has been piling up the scores.

“I didn’t expect to be doing as well as I have been at Mildenhall. But it is still early days,” Kemp added.

“I am sure I will get some great support from the Ipswich fans, being a local boy, and that will hopefully work in my favour.”

Zach Wajtknecht was crowned British Under-19 Champion with a flawless 15-point maximum at Plymouth last year.

However, it is Dan Bewley who is the hot favourite to take the title, with Wajtknecht now ineligible.

Bewley is the name on many speedway fans’ lips at the moment and with great reason.

The Cumbrian already has a catalogue of high-profile heat wins at Premiership level with Belle Vue under his belt, as his sweeping style entertains the home crowd at the National Speedway Stadium, in Manchester.

He has already beaten Krzysztof Kasprzak and Sam Masters in the top-flight this season and will take some beating tonight.

Ipswich-born William O’Keefe, currently riding for Stoke, is another rider who will have plenty of support. Last year he rode for Plymouth Devils.

Bewley, Jack Thomas and Kyle Bickley are the likely favourites from the off over a 20-heat formula.
