Ipswich easily saw off Bury in the opening round of the British Team championship, the Manchester club having little to offer against the powerful young Eagles side, despite the northern club enjoying home advantage.

The opening few heats suggested a close contest but five consecutive wins to Ipswich put the match beyond Bury’s reach, Ipswich leading 53 to 35 points by half-time.

Ipswich dominated the second half, Bury’s only response being a shared heat. A final 7-3 from Chris and Lewis Osborne sealed a convincing win, 108 to 66. Lewis Roberts topped scored despite breaking the third bike frame of his young senior career. Along with Lewis, heat leaders Ashley Hill and Lewis Osborne dropped just a single point between them.

Ipswich will visit 2012 champions Horspath in a tough quarter-final draw.

Ipswich scorers: Lewis Roberts 20, Ashley Hill 18, Lewis Osborne 18, Jamie Chittock 13, Richard Fellgett 12, Chris Osborne 11, Charlie Rumbold 10, Leon Mower 6

Eight clubs from all over the country will be sending their best under-16 riders from as far afield as Exeter, Poole and Stockport.

Ipswich, the current holders, will be out to retain their title, but face stiff competition in what is sure to be an entertaining afternoon’s racing.

Three of last season’s winning Ipswich under-16 side, Richard Fellgett, Matt Hill and Daniel Knights, are all included in the five-man Eagles’ team, along with under-14 racer Ben Harvey and the youngest member of the team, 13-year-old Pierce Bacon, who finished third in the British U-13 final at Swindon earlier this season.

The first semi-final is at noon, the second (involving Ipswich) is at 1.30pm, with the final at 3.30pm. Admission is free.
