The newly-formed Eastern Counties Ladies rugby team played their second match at Newmarket on Sunday, scoring four tries in their 24-12 victory over Kent.
Counties, with just 17 players available and several playing out of position, proved strong in defence throughout, and were always prepared to move the ball quickly.
They took an early lead through Louisa Gallimore, Lizell Heather converting, and were always in front. Kent replied with a try, but Counties kept up the pressure, Heather going over for a 12-5 half-time lead.
Strong defence kept Kent at bay early in the second half, the visitors finally finding a way through as Counties started to tire. But a spirited response from Counties saw Chloe Baker go over for a late converted try.
