But Martin Johnson's charges, still reeling from a battering by Southern Hemisphere teams in recent weeks, have avoided huge favourites New Zealand in today's draw for the 2011 event.
Instead, the 2003 champions and last year's runners-up will face Scotland and Argentina plus one other European country to emerge from qualifying and a play-off winner.
Wales face reigning world champions South Africa, Fiji and teams from Oceania 1 (probably Samoa) and Africa 1.
Ireland will battle Australia, Ireland, Italy, Europe 2 and Americas 2.
