COLCHESTER-born star Darren Day has today denied driving while almost twice the legal alcohol limit.

The actor and singer appeared in Cardiff Magistrates' Court after being pulled over in his Mercedes by police in the city last month.

The court heard that the 39-year-old, who grew up in Colchester and attended Sir Charles Lucas School, had been stopped after officers saw his car go through a red light.

They then had to take Day to the police station for a breathalyser test, where he gave a reading of 65 micrograms in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

Defending Day, Jenny Kumeta said he disputed the manner in which it is claimed he drove the car and said he was only in the vehicle for 20 seconds.

She also said there were issues regarding the breathalyser test.

The case was adjourned until August 27 for trial.
