ESSEX will face Cheshire in the final of the Spitfire National Over-60s Championship.

Essex defeated Yorkshire by 49 runs in their semi-final while Cheshire overcame Devon by 28 in the other semi-final to reach the final which will take place at Oakham CC on Wednesday, September 7, start 12 noon.

Tuesday’s semi-final at Halstead’s Star Stile ground was originally reduced to 40 overs-a-side, but when it rained after 27 overs of the Essex innings it was then cut to 36 overs. Essex totalled 199 for four, with Bob Newman scoring 96, Malcolm Wright 51 and Mark Surridge 29.

Yorkshire made 150 for eight in their reply, with Kevan Pratt taking three for 29 and Surridge two for 29, each bowler being restruicted to a maximum of seven overs.

John Stuck, the Essex Over-60s manager, said: “We won quite comfortably in the end. Halstead did a tremendous job to keep the game on, and we were very grateful to them for their efforts.”
