Suffolk men go into their first home Anglian League match of the season against Cambridgeshire at Hintlesham on Sunday with a feelgood factor.

James Biggs, the reigning Suffolk amateur champion, won the Lagonda Trophy at Gog Magog Golf Club last week. He followed in the footsteps of Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.

Biggs was handily placed after the opening two rounds. Then two more rounds of two under par 68 lifted him to the top of the leader board.

Biggs will form a foursomes partnership with Josh Cottrell who is back in the county ranks after missing last year.

Gregor Tait, who has returned from the United States, and Monty Scowsill who has been playing for Exeter University, will hopefully boost the team which lost against Lincolnshire at Spalding.

Paul Waring, Sam Byford and Habebul Islam could not be considered because all three are involved in the Brabazon Trophy, the England Open Amateur Championship, at Frilford Heath this week.

Suffolk captain Jack Cardy forms a foursomes pairing with Sam Debenham. Both are Hintlesham members.

Calvin Sherwood and former Cornwall player Chris Fleming, who played well against a team of professionals in a friendly match at Hintlesham in March, should prove formidable.

Suffolk: Jack Cardy, Sam Debenham, Calvin Sherwood, Chris Fleming, Monty Scowsill, Gregor Tait, James Biggs, Josh Cottrell.

Cambridgeshire won their opening match against Norfolk at King’s Lynn.

They are without their foursomes champions Nick Smits and former Suffolk captain Dave Quinney who are not playing county golf this year.

Toby Briggs (Links Newmarket) has returned after almost two years out of the reckoning. He and George Howard (Gog Magog) won all eight of the matches in the Eastern Counties Foursomes at Seacroft.

In the other Anglian League match on the opening day Leicestershire beat an under-strength Northamptonshire at Wellingborough.

On Sunday Leicestershire are at home to Lincolnshire while Norfolk visit Northants.

The Suffolk second team are away at Saffron Walden. James Tyler and Adam Sheldrake, who were in the first team at Spalding, step down.

Charlie Taylor of Diss, a late replacement in the victory over Lincolnshire seconds, has retained his place.

Suffolk second team: Ben Sayers, Josh Robertson, Chris Duffy, Jasper Johnson, James Tyler, Adam Sheldrake, Chris Bartrum and Charlie Taylor.

n Stenson holders Aldeburgh were knocked out in a very close Stenson Shield first round match at Newton Green.

The home team led 3-1 after the foursomes but Aldeburgh fought back in the afternoon singles.

It was decided on the last green in the final game when in-form Jed Seeley beat Gregor Tait one up.

Aldeburgh started well enough with Will Wright and Ian Kitson winning the top foursomes.

Then Newton Green’s talented juniors, James Cooper and Harvey Watts, got the better of Tait and Roger Taylor.

Mike Polley and Ian Woodhead scored a crucial one-up win over Josh Robertson and Nigel Robson before Seeley and Steve Wordley beat James Reiss and Robert Palmer.

A half from Wright and singles wins for Kitson, Reiss, Taylor and Robertson gave Aldeburgh hope.

Watts and Woodhead won singles for the home side who were without one-handicap Russell Oakey.

Umbrellas were up at the start of the match between The Suffolk and Stowmarket. The visitors started as favourites but no-one expected such a one-sided contest.

Stowmarket are now at home to Bury St Edmunds in a tie which looks on a knife’s edge.

Rushmere, boosted by Josh Cottrell and Connor James, had no problem sweeping aside the challenge of an under-strength Southwold. Charlie Maskell played an afternoon singles as a replacement for Michael Buck who had a sore back.

Now Rushmere have an eagerly-awaited second round home tie against Ipswich.

Bungay, missing Liam Hansey who was playing for Suffolk under 18 boys, won against Fynn Valley who were also without key players.
