ROGER Toone of Stoke by Nayland and Tim Lunness, now a member at Ipswich, won the first Suffolk Alliance meeting of the season at Rushmere where the sun shone and there was very little wind.

They were among the earlier starters and their haul of 45 Stableford points was never seriously threatened.

Second, third and fourth prizes were all settled on count-back with 43 points. Runners-up were Gerry Day and Ian Carter of Stoke by Nayland who had 23 on the back nine.

A highlight of the day was a hole in one at the 181-yard sixth by Eric Kiddle, a former Haverhill club captain. He used a four iron. His playing partner was Willie Penman. A large bottle of Scotch whisky was left on the bar for competitors to help themselves.

The greens were in good order but there was very little run on the fairways. The leading professional was Andrew Tokley of Stoke by Nayland with a round of 69, one better than Alex Lucas of Waldringfield who was round in 70. Shane Constable (Stoke by Nayland) and Tony Dobson (Stonham Barns) both had 76.
