FIVE-TIME Olympic medalist Ian Thorpe will swim at the World Cup in Singapore, signalling his return to international competition, ahead of next year’s Olympic Games.

The 28-year-old will compete for Swimming Australia, his first competitive event since 2006 and has been included in a 26-strong squad for the three Asian legs of the event in Singapore, Beijing and Tokyo.

Thorpe, who revealed this year that he planned to come out of retirement said: “I’m excited about being part of an Australian Swim Team again after all these years.

“The reality for me is I’m now at the next stage of my preparation and getting ready to race competitively, and I’m really looking forward to catching up with everyone in Singapore.”

Libby Trickett, a gold medallist at the Athens and Beijing Olympics, also returns after a two-year absence.
