After one of the best team performances of the season Melford were defeated with just seven minutes left on the clock and probably most people would have agreed that for their fighting spirit alone, they were worth a point from the game. New Melford keeper Paul; Wood with his prompting and catching ability, was a tower of strength behind the Melford defence.

He was in early action, saving with his feet from Best and catching just under the bar an effort from Partridge. But Melford then forced the issue with Manser shooting inches wide and Welch putting his effort over the bar. Grindrod headed off the line an effort from Partridge. Again it was keeper Wood who was in action diving at the feet of Partridge when the Diss striker was through on goal. Just a minute before half-time Melford went behind, a crossfield ball from Benterman was picked up by Jones his progress along the right flank failed to find a Melford challenge, his ball into the box bounced at a convenient height for MOODY to stoop and direct his header wide of keeper Wood.

Early in the second half the keeper pushed a fierce shot from Moody onto the bar with the rebound being headed goalward by Mitchell, but French made a clearing header off the goal-line. Melford forced a corner at the other end and this time Soanes made two goal-line headed clearances from efforts from Statham and Manser. On 59 minutes Melford levelled, Grindrod laid the ball off to French his incisive pass found CLARK who spotting home keeper Camidge off his line lobbed the ball into the net from 30 yards. This was a fillip for Melford and substitute Taylor fired a fierce low drive that Camidge did well to push it round the post. The home team pushed forward for the winner but found the back three of Grimster, Benterman and French in resolute form. With seven minutes left on the clock Diss found the winner which came when a miskick in the Melford defence, found MOODY and he and fired home from 12 yards, giving Wood no chance. An improving Melford probably just about deserved a point from the game for sheer determination.
