Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy says there is ‘every chance’ he will give a few fringe players a chance in Saturday’s Championship dead rubber at relegated Rotherham.

The Millers have claimed just 18 points from 43 games and have long been cut adrift at the foot of the table, while 15th-placed Town are now mathematically safe following Easter weekend victories against Burton and Newcastle.

Asked if he might experiment with his team, McCarthy said: “There’s every chance. I haven’t made my mind up yet but it’s the one opportunity I’ve got to play some of them.

“I would like to think that if I did that the ones who play are busting a gut to be in that team and do something in terms of next season. I’ll see, I’ve got the rest of the day to think about.”

It will be senior fringe players, rather than untested kids such as Ben Morris, Flynn Downes and Pat Webber that will get the nod though.

“It’s unlikely for those sort of lads as there are others are in front of them who have not played a lot,” said McCarthy.

“Teddy Bishop’s back and fit, Dozzer (Andre Dozzell) is back and fit. Unfortunately Tristan Nydam, who has been doing really well, is injured.

“But there have been lads like Danny Rowe and Dominic Samuel, who have travelled around the country and been on the bench or not been on the bench. And if I’m going to do it it’ll be those guys who are going to get a game.”

McCarthy says he’ll play a full-strength side in the last two matches – at home to play-off chasing Sheffield Wednesday and away at relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest – to ‘protect the integrity’ of the league.

The Blues boss says Crystal Palace loanee Jonny Williams is another who could possibly come into his thoughts at the New York Stadium.

Jonas Knudsen, Adam Webster, Steven Taylor, Luke Hyam and Giles Coke remain sidelined.
