Frinton-on-Sea moved up to third in the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League, thanks to a victory at Great Witchingham by 19 runs.

Captain Kyran Young and all-rounder Michael Comber both scored heavily in Frinton’s innings of 295 for five off 50 overs, after Young had won the toss and elected to bat.

Great Witchingham threatened to overhaul the Essex club’s big total, when powering to 141 for one in their reply, but in the end the Norfolk hosts lost five wickets for the addition of just 52 runs and eventually came up short on 276 for nine.

Earlier, after Michael Griggs had contributed a swift 14 at the top of the innings, former Essex batsman Jaik Mickleburgh and Young shared a 44-run partnership for the second wicket.

Mickleburgh was bowled by Tom Collishaw for 42, accrued off 59 balls, but his departure simply paved the way for Young and the incoming Comber to put on a superb 153 for the third wicket, to take the score up to 223.

The hard-hitting Comber, who like team-mates Young and Mickleburgh is currently in action for Suffolk at Hertfordshire in the Minor Counties Championship, struck 81 off 83 balls.

The ex-Bury St Edmunds all-rounder helped himself to three sixes and eight fours, before he became the first of Brett Stolworthy’s three victims.

The momentum was increased by Merv Westfield, who smashed 35 off just 15 balls with a couple of sixes and four boundaries to ensure that Frinton got close to 300.

Young finished on 99 not out, accumulated off 112 balls, while Stolworthy had the best figures of 10-0-47-3.

Openers James Spelman (34) and Sam Arthurton (74), always difficult to dislodge, put on 94 for the first wicket to frustrate Frinton.

Miguel Machado eventually trapped Spelman lbw, on his way to good figures of 7.4-0-46-3, while Young took the vital wicket of skipper Arthurton, caught by Ryan Harrington, to leave the hosts on 141 for two.

Home batsmen then came and went regularly, with five different bowlers taking wickets. Stolworthy struck 42 off 32 balls at No. 6, but Frinton kept it tight to chalk up a sixth win of the summer.
