Ahead of Ipswich Town’s trip to Bristol City this weekend, we look at a few players who turned out for both teams.
Jon Stead
Was initially a hit at Portman Road following a loan spell in 2008, before signing permanently for £600,000, but his face didn’t fit with manager Roy Keane and he was moved on to City in the summer of 2010.
During his time at Ashton Gate he was loaned out a number of times, now finding himself at Notts County. Scored a 90th minute winner for Bristol City against Ipswich, on the Blues last visit in 2013.
Danny Haynes
The ‘Canary Crusher’ regularly found the net against local rivals Norwich, after graduating from the Ipswich youth system, while he also earned himself a reputation as something of a super sub.
However, his time with the Blues, perhaps surprisingly, came to an end in the summer of 2009, when he was sold to Bristol City for an undisclosed fee. He played just over 50 games at Ashton Gate before returning to boyhood club Charlton via Barnsley, with stops at Notts County, Hibs, Crewe and Cheltenham following before moving to current club Ebbsfleet.
Marcus Stewart
A Bristolian, Stewart started his career at Rovers before an 18-month spell on the red side of the city between June 2005 and January 2007.
Following his £2.5m move from Huddersfield to Ipswich in 2000 he helped fire the Blues to the Premier League, where he was top-scoring Englishman in the remarkable 2000-01 season which, following relegation, helped him move to Sunderland for £3.25.
He finished up his career with the likes of Preston, Yeovil and Exeter, and is now assistant manager of Rovers.
Gavin Williams
Despite suffering numerous injury problems, Williams was a reliable midfielder for Ipswich who was strong in the tackle, during his spell at Portman Road between 2005 and 2008.
He moved to Bristol City from there and made more than 50 appearances before loan spells back at Yeovil, after which he moved to Bristol Rovers and finished his career at Woking.
Russell Osman
Defender Osman was a vital member of the Ipswich side which won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup under Sir Bobby Robson, playing more than 300 times in the process and earning a reputation as an Ipswich Town club legend.
He played 70 times for City between 1991-94 and even had a spell as player manager, before eventually calling it a day.
Bradley Orr
After starting out at Everton and then Newcastle United, Orr made more than 250 appearances for Bristol between 2004 and 2010, before moves to QPR and then Blackburn.
It was from Ewood he was loaned to Ipswich in 2012, making 13 appearances in a largely uneventful loan spell. He’s currently without a club.
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas
One of the biggest enigma’s ever to play for the Blues, JET showed flashes of brilliance during his time at Portman Road but never managed any kind of consistency. He wasn’t Mick McCarthy’s cup of tea and was eventually swapped with Bristol City’s Paul Anderson.
While at Ashton Gate, JET was again in and out of the side and he was allowed to leave for QPR in the summer. He’s now at MK Dons on loan.
Tyrone Barnett
The nomadic striker spent a fair amount of his time with Peterborough out on loan, with Ipswich and Bristol City both taking him for temporary spells.
He played just three times for Ipswich during an uninspiring spell for the Blues in 2012, failing to score, and managed just one goal in 17 while with City.
Matthew Bates
The former Middlesbrough man’s time at Portman Road was an unfortunate one, performing well in his two appearances before suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury which threatened his career.
He signed for City in 2012 but managed just 13 appearances, before moving on to Bradford and now Hartlepool.
Marlon Harewood
The last memory of Harewood’s time at Ipswich may well be his miss from just a yard out against Oxford, in 1999, with his spell with City just as tough in front of goal as he never started a leage game in his six months there.
He’s now at Nuneaton.
On the staff
Former Ipswich manager Joe Royle played more than 100 times for City between 1977 and 1980, prior to his move to Norwich, while current assistant Terry Connor had a short spell at Ashton Gate as his playing career drew to a close.
In the current squad
Three members of the current squad will make returns to Ashton Gate this weekend, led by Bristol-born Cole Skuse who made 300 appearances for his boyhood club before joining the Blues in the summer of 2013.
Brett Pitman made a £1million move to City in 2010, before returning to Bournemouth three years later, while injured goalkeeper Dean Gerken also spent time at Ashton Gate.
