Colchester United, who avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, have flown out of the traps like a prize greyhound this term.

Joe Dunne’s men are one of only four teams boasting a 100% record, after the first two games in League One.

Following hot on the heels of an opening day 1-0 win at Gillingham – albeit for the intrusion of a midweek 5-1 trouncing in the League Cup, at the hands of Peterborough – the super-confident U’s chalked up another encouraging 1-0 victory at the expense of Port Vale on Saturday.

The attack-minded U’s squandered a glut of chances in the first 20 minutes, but heads did not drop and, like at Priestfield the previous weekend, they finished the game with a flourish.

Gavin Massey’s 74th minute winner, against stubborn Vale, was not as late as Andy Bond’s 88th minute goal in Kent, but it was just as sweet.

Massey swept home from point blank range, after Jabo Ibehre’s shot had only been parried by keeper Chris Neal.
