Gillespie is spot on

COLCHESTER United maintained their unbeaten pre-season record with a 1-0 win at Braintree Town this evening, thanks to a second half penalty from Steven Gillespie.

This friendly doubled up as a benefit match for Jamie Guy, who is on the long comeback trail from a career-threatening double leg fracture.

Braintree striker Guy, who spent six years at Colchester earlier in his career, led out the teams and also kicked off the game, before making way for Braintree triallist Kevin McLeod, another former U’s player.

Gillespie’s winner arrived in the 74th minute from the penalty spot. Andrew Bond was tripped by Nicky Symons inside the box, and cool customer Gillespie rammed home the spot kick.
