Golf: Adam, 16, in Suffolk bid

A 16-YEAR-OLD Newton Green player has become runner-up in the prestigious senior county matchplay championship for the Suffolk President's Mashie.Adam Woodhead lost in the final of the two day event at Stowmarket after qualifying with fellow Newton youngster Ryan Talbot by both finishing in the top 16 in the Suffolk Men's Open at the same course a week earlier.

A 16-YEAR-OLD Newton Green player has become runner-up in the prestigious senior county matchplay championship for the Suffolk President's Mashie.

Adam Woodhead lost in the final of the two day event at Stowmarket after qualifying with fellow Newton youngster Ryan Talbot by both finishing in the top 16 in the Suffolk Men's Open at the same course a week earlier.

The pair were drawn together in the first round of the matchplay contest, with Adam winning 2 and 1 after a tight tussle with his fellow clubman. Adam won the first three holes, but Ryan turned the tables and was two up with six to play. With birdies at the 15th and 17th Adam eventually went through.

He then beat Matt Fordham 8 and 6, with a display of stunning golf, and in the semi-final was drawn against James Wright, one the Suffolk long standing Elite players and he beat him on the third play off hole on the Sunday morning.

Adam reached the final to face Chris Smith, of Fynn Valley, with the match ebbing in both directions, and six of the seven opening holes being won with birdies. But having had a long morning round in the semis, Adam looked tired, dropping shots on the 8th, 9th and 11,th and was eventually beaten 5 and 3.
