Colchester came up against a strong passing Gravesend side on Saturday but found themselves unlucky not to come away with a point.
Gravesend were fast out of the blocks, attacking Colchester at pace. Colchester were found panicking on the ball and gave it straight back to the Gravesend forwards for much of the opening exchanges. The visitors did manage one or two meaningful attacks but the first half was dominated by Gravesend. Colchester remained strong at the back and prevented any score with the sides going into half time tied at 0-0.
The second half saw Colchester dominate possession and earn numerous penalty corners for their efforts. Helen Peters had a couple of strikes blocked by the Gravesend defence with the follow up rebounds just eluding Helen Barnes on the post. At the other end Naomi Allen and Angela Evans did their best to cut out any counter attacks and a fine double save from Colchester keeper Jacqui Crombie kept Colchester in the game. Eventually, the visitor's inability to take advantage of their possession and opportunities cost them the points when, with five minutes to go, Gravesend scrambled in a shot from close range to steal all three points from a disappointed Colchester.
