TODAY'S announcement that Ipswich is to host the British Men's Gymnastics Championship has been hailed as a "massive boost" to the town's campaign to attract an international training team ahead of the 2102 Olympics.

The Ipswich Gymnastics Facility will be the venue not only for the British championship but also a Great Britain v Russia women's international next March.

Ipswich Borough Council's Team Ipswich initiative has been promoting the town across the world, highlighting Ipswich's ability, sporting infrastructure and transport links to welcome a training team here for the "green Games".

Councillor Judy Terry, the Council's Arts, Culture & Leisure portfolio-holder, said: "This is fantastic news and a real shot in the arm for Team Ipswich. We have invested heavily in the gymnastics centre and see it as one of our trump cards in our bid to attract a top team here in 2012.

We are close to Stratford and Felixstowe and can ensure a trouble-free and environmentally-friendly training timetable for many leading teams. In the meantime, we are looking forward to these big events next year and I congratulate Andy Wood and his team at the gymnastics centre."
