Football: Danny Haynes scored an impressive hat-trick as Ipswich Town's second string beat Northampton 3-0 on the first game of the new reserve season.

England Under-19 international Haynes, who has only been limited to substitute appearances for the first team so far this season, opened the scoring at Sixfields after nine minutes when he tapped in from close range following a Matt Richards corner.

The strong Town side, which also included Shane Supple and Jaime Peters, doubled their lead soon after the half hour, Haynes winning and converting a penalty.

Haynes, whose pace proved a thorn in the Northampton side all afternoon, completed his hat-trick 15 minutes into the second half, heading in from Richards' corner.

Ed Upson, another to impress, just failed to beat home keeper Chris Dunn with a lob, before Haynes nearly added a fourth when he smashed a shot against the bar late on.
