Heavyweights to clash in cup

TWO Essex football heavy-weights will lock horns in the semi-finals of this season's Essex Senior Cup supported by BBC Essex, with Blue Square South leaders Chelmsford City playing host to Coca-Cola Football League One side Colchester United.

TWO Essex football heavy-weights will lock horns in the semi-finals of this season's Essex Senior Cup supported by BBC Essex, with Blue Square South leaders Chelmsford City playing host to Coca-Cola Football League One side Colchester United.

The Clarets will face the U's at Melbourne Stadium in the final four after the draw took place at BBC Essex Headquarters in New London Road, Chelmsford.

In the other semi-final, both Redbridge and Concord Rangers will rate their chances of a prestigious County Cup Final when they meet on a date on or before February 14, 2009.

Quarter-final action saw FC Clacton's impressive record of defeating higher-ranked teams ended as they fell to a battling 2-1 defeat at home to Concord Rangers, while Redbridge lasted 65 minutes without a recognised goalkeeper as they defeated Canvey Island 2-0.

That was also the score between Chelmsford City and Dagenham & Redbridge at Melbourne Park, while a strong Colchester United team had no problem in overcoming AFC Hornchurch by a six-goal margin at home.

Semi-finals (to be played on or before 14th February 2009): Redbridge v Concord Rangers, Chelmsford City v Colchester United.
