IAN Henderson warmed up for the new League One campaign with his second pre-season goal in Colchester United’s latest Dutch friendly.
The U’s maintained their unbeaten start to their pre-season programme, although hosts Jong FC Utrecht did net a late equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw at the National Training Centre in Zeist this lunchtime.
Henderson broke the deadlock after seven minutes, to add to his thunderous goal bagged in the 4-0 win at Maldon & Tiptree last week. The U’s had also beaten SDC Putten at the start of their Dutch trip on Monday.
Today was another useful run-out against a talented young Utrecht side made up of under-20s and under-23s.
Defender Magnus Okuonghae enjoyed his second run-out of the week, following his long-term ankle injury, while John-Joe O’Toole was also back in the side after missing the Putten match through a slight niggle.
Manager John Ward said after the game: “It’s been an excellent week capped off with an excellent game today.
“It was a good end to the week’s work and the trip has been a fantastic opportunity for us to get our work done.”
The U’s starting line-up v Jong FC Utrecht was: Cousins, Wilson, Okuonghae, Heath, Bender, O’Toole, James, Bond, Wordsworth, Henderson & Odejayi.
Subs used: Vincent, Rose, Izzet, Baldwin, White, Arnott, Hamilton & Eastman,
The U’s return to England this evening. Their next pre-season game is at Braintree Town for Jamie Guy’s Benefit match at Cressing Road on Tuesday evening.,
