The new Blues boss started working with his squad for the first time on Monday as the players returned to Playford Road for the start of pre-season training.

And he used Waghorn – who scored 16 goals and provided 11 assists in an impressive debut campaign for the club – as an example of the high standards he will be setting.

“I want players to maybe feel like they’ve got a little bit of something to prove,” he said. “And that doesn’t have to be players who haven’t played at Championship level before.

“We’ve obviously got a lot of lads that have and for them it’s like ‘can I do better?’

“I don’t know, let’s pick Wags for example. He got 16 goals last season, I think I am right in saying. I want him to better that. So that’s his challenge.

“Don’t just be satisfied you did well last season. Can you kick on again? That’s what we’re after.”

With Town having finished 12th in the Championship last season, Hurst continued: “It’s great to meet all of the players for the first time and outline my expectations and how we work. I’m really looking forward to it.

“All I’ve said to them is ‘let’s be the best that we can be’. I’m not one for setting particular targets as such. I think that would be foolish, particularly when I haven’t worked with them yet.

“I’ve seen some footage, but as I said in my first press conference – some players might respond better to me, some might have been better working under the previous manager. We’ll see how we go.

“One thing I’ll ask is for them to push themselves to be the best they can be as individuals and the best we can be as a team.”

He added: “I’ve been told we’ve been well-received, but I’m not foolish or naive enough to think that won’t change if we don’t get good results. That’s what it comes down to and hopefully we can get some good results.

“We also want to put on some good football that the fans like to see. That’s what we’ll be striving for in pre-season in preparation for that first game against Blackburn.”
