Suffolk-based cyclist Tanya Griffiths is preparing to rub shoulders with the world’s best racers, in a televised event set to be held next month.

The 29-year-old Ipswich Bicycle Club member only took up the sport two years ago, but will be mixing it with women’s legend Marianne Vos and Team GB star Lizzie Armitstead at the Ride London Women’s GP on August 9.

Three-times World Road Race champion Vos won gold at the 2012 Olympics with Armitstead taking silver, and both will feature in the circuit race, to be broadcast live on BBC2.

Sparley-Primal Pro Cycling rider Griffiths finished a respectable 36th in last year’s inaugural race, 30 seconds behind winner Laura Trott, and will be a domestique for team-mate Eileen Roe, who recently won the National Road Circuit Championships with the Ipswich rider’s help.

“I competed in the race last year, alongside Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell and Dani King and that was pretty special,” said landscape architect Griffiths.

“I raced Lizzie Armitstead in the National Road Championships and of course I will be in the same event as Marianne Vos, who is probably the all-time best women’s cyclist.

“She has won just about every discipline she has competed in. She is the ultimate in women’s cycling.”

While Griffiths’ job will be to help Roe get as near to the podium as possible, her long-term aims centre around emulating her team-mate.

“I just want to keep improving and my long-term ambition is to aim for the National Championship jersey,” Griffiths explained.

“My age means that even if I became the best in the world, I would not be selected for the next Olympics, but the National jersey is a real target in the next two or three years.

“I have been getting better and better and this race has come when I am at my peak fitness.”

She added: “In London, my job is to be Eileen’s domestique and this gives me a great opportunity to improve, as I am learning all the time.

“Eileen could have a chance of being on the podium and my job is to make sure she gets there by being quick off the line and not get getting behind the slower riders.

“It will be tough but Marianne (Vos) or Lizzie could have a crash or a puncture, be feeling unwell or just not race particularly well and we have to be ready.”

Mick McCarthy is the early favourite for vacant Republic of Ireland job following the departure of both Martin O’Neill and assistant Roy Keane.
