Ipswich Town Ladies bounced back from last week’s disappointing defeat at Leyton Orient with a 4-2 victory over Denham United at the Goldstar Ground, Felixstowe, on Sunday.

Goals from Miagh Downey, Amanda Crump, Zoe Cossey and an own goal saw the Tractor Girls to a well deserved win over Denham, with Kayleigh Currivan twice on the score sheet for the visitors.

Town took the lead after just 12 minutes when Cossey’s cross ricocheted into the net, following multiple deflections from Denham defenders. However, the Buckinghamshire side struck back after just three minutes when Currivan found herself unmarked in the area, equalising with a free header.

The Blues responded well to being pegged back, with Natasha Thomas and Crump both missing decent chances before Downey struck to put Town back in front. Jac Ball played a forward pass in to Downey, with the powerful striker showing great ability to hold the ball up, beat two defenders and fire the ball left footed into the bottom right corner.

The visitors responded four minutes after the restart with a wonder goal. The ball was played over the top to Currivan, who let fly with a stupendous first time dipping volley from 25 yards, giving Town keeper’ Sian Fagg no chance.

Ten minutes later, the Blues were awarded a penalty when Downey was bundled over in the area. Skipper Crump took the resulting spot kick and calmy dispatched it past Denham keeper’ Gracie Perkis to put Town 3-2 ahead.

Cossey gave Ipswich a deserved two goal cushion and confirmed the three points with a trademark goal, cutting in on her right foot after a perfect through ball from Crump, and smashing it high into the top right corner, for her 10th goal of the season.

Despite the game being won, the Blues weren’t done there, with Cossey creating a hat-trick of chances to make it five, but found the Crossbar and Perkis equal to her attempts.

The result sees fourth-placed Town cut the gap at the top to ten points, with leaders AFC Wimbledon’s game against fellow promotion rival MK Dons having been called off. The Tractor Girls return to league action on Sunday away at Stevenage, kick off 2pm.
