Ipswich’s Hannah Martin scored her first international goal, but ended up on the losing side, as England were defeated 5-1 by Argentina, in London, on Saturday.

Nine Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallists took to the pitch as England began their home World Cup campaign against the skilful South Americans, former Ipswich School pupil Martin, who plays for Surbiton, converting a penalty corner to equalise the scores at 1-1, in what was her fifth international.

“It was a very valuable lesson, lessons learned at this point in a cycle are even more valuable and the harder they are, the more they resonate,” said coach Danny Kerry, after the defeat to Las Leonas.

“It’s one thing to say to the players ‘this is what we need to do,’ now they understand the signifance of it.”

It was a good learning exercise for Kerry’s side, and they will look to make further progress in Sunday’s sold-out game with the Netherlands at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.
