Last month Keane agreed a fee for the Republic of Ireland star, who even under went a Portman Road medical.
But Premier League Hull hijacked the move, only for that deal to collapse.
Murphy, 26, had several trials at Ipswich before opting to join Sunderland in 2005.
Watford have blocked Ipswich's attempts to sign Hungary striker Tamas Priskin, leading Keane to try again for original target Murphy.
